  1. he‚Äôs not a technological determinist, he‚Äôs trying to 
  2. make us aware of technology and its powers. But 
  3. he is not saying a) that this is inevitable, in fact 
  4. one of his favorite lines was, nothing is inevitable 
  5. so long as we‚Äôre prepared to pay attention. He was 
  6. talking about cultural transformation on a large 
  7. scale, but he wasn‚Äôt talking about the media simply 
  8. doing it for us. So I leap back to that defense of 
  9. McLuhan in a way simply because I think many of 
  10. his critics, even when they did have good points 
  11. and can see holes in his work, they went too far 
  12. and attempted on very limited basis to eliminate 
  13. his thinking.
